Shave Decades Off Your Retirement Timeline

From 1994 to 1997 I was rejected 20 times by various dental schools before finally getting accepted on the 21st attempt.

Following dental school, in the first seven years of my dental career, I was able to build six very successful dental practices.

How was this possible?

Did I posses some knowledge or intelligence that other dentists don’t have? Definitely not.

Did I have a wealthy family who bank-rolled the operation? A resounding NO to that one too… in fact, while in undergrad, I worked a full time forty-hour week and paid for 100 percent of my tuition and expenses. The crushing schedule took a toll on my GPA and left me with an average dental school application.

Fortunately, one dental school admissions committee recognized my persistence and decided to take a chance on me. It was a blessing, a stroke of luck, that changed the trajectory of my life forever.

So back to the question…

How was a 20 time reject to dental school who didn’t come from a wealthy background able to build a multiple practice empire?

The simple answer is this: I made more mistakes than anyone else.

I failed faster, corrected course, got myself up, and tried again and again and again…

I attended events, found coaches and mentors and surrounded myself with people much smarter than me.

This June marks the fourteenth year of my dental career and in that time I’ve been sidelined twice with major spine surgeries. But never during my months of physical rehab did I experience a drop in my level of income.

Because of what I’ve learned about creating a systematized dental business I’ve been able to design a business independent of my own two hands. I know now that even if I never pick up a handpiece again for the rest of my life, my family will be taken care of.

For me, that knowledge has created a level of peace that is indescribable, and I want that for you.

On June 3, 2016 in Auckland., New Zealand and on June 10, 2016 in Sydney, Australia at Dental Success Summit 2016, I’ll be uncovering the formula that can help any dentist to immediately increase the order and profitability of their dental practice.

As a special “Thank You,” for being a member of this community, we have lowered our cost of registration to only $897 for dentists and $97 for non-dentist team members- that’s $400 off of our regular price!

Career Advice from a 20 Time Loser?

Here’s a question to ponder…

How many times would you allow yourself to fail at something before finally giving up?

It has become part of popular folklore that Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before he was finally successful in creating the first light bulb.

His famous quote, “I have not failed 10,000 times, I have successfully found 10,000 ways not to make a light bulb…” demonstrates his remarkable resiliency and unique way of viewing “failure.”

The day that I graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a BA in psychology was one of the best days of my life.

Yes, I was happy to have cleared the first hurdle on my journey to dental school, but more importantly, I was proud that I was able to self-finance my education and living expenses by working three jobs while going to school full time.

I can still remember the feeling of pride and accomplishment that I’d never experienced up to that point in my life.

But what I could have never guessed at that moment was that the next three years of my life would be filled with failure, disappointment and frustration.

While completing my undergraduate degree with zero personal or student loans was a noble goal, juggling the overwhelming workload and academic schedule took its toll on my GPA.

My first attempt at the dental school applications process left me with ten rejection letters out of ten applications. At this point, most reasonable people would have moved on to a different career path… but I was determined to give dental school another shot.

Knowing that I would have to wait one full year until I could re-apply to dental school, I took my resume, bought a cheap suit and pounded the pavement. I applied for every entry level corporate position that I could find.

I went on dozens of interviews… and got exactly zero job offers.

I was forced to swallow my pride and crawl back to the three part time jobs that I worked while attending college; a bouncer at a local bar, a personal trainer and a kick boxing instructor.

To make matters worse, since I had given up all of my seniority at each job, I was barely getting enough hours to support myself.

Things got so bad that for a time I was sleeping on friend’s couches and eating whatever was left over in the kitchen at the bar where I was working at the end of my shifts. It was one of the toughest times of my life.

But eventually, things started slowly getting better.

In a strange series of events, I ended up borrowing enough money to purchase a catering truck franchise. Yes, you heard that right, I became a “Roach Coach,” driver! And during that same period of time I was accepted to the executive MBA program at the University of San Diego.

But my dream of becoming a dentist was not dead…
On my second attempt at the dental school application process, I applied to another ten schools… and once again I received ten rejections.

By this point, I was coming to the realization that my odds of getting into dental school had gone from long shot to near impossibility.

So I took the opportunity to sharpen my entrepreneurial skills, read every book I could find on small business ownership and applied it to my Roach Coach business. At the same time I continued my executive MBA classes.

Within a year of buying my franchise, I had paid back my initial start-up loan and had become one of the most profitable trucks in the fleet.

The experience was teaching me invaluable lessons about running a successful small business. I learned how to recruit and retain a good team, how to attract customers, how to read and interpret financial reports, how to maintain a budget and control overhead, and how to develop systems of efficiency.

Around that same period of time, I met the love of my life and my future wife, Leslie.

And three years and twenty-one attempts after starting the dental school application process, I finally got my one and only acceptance into dental school.

Fast forward sixteen years… I am grateful every single day for the blessings that the profession of dentistry has brought into my life.

Six successful dental practices, 150 dental assisting school locations, an international best selling book,  a podcast with listenership in over 110 countries, and a community of like-minded dentists from all over the world that reads my articles, watches my videos and attends my live events…

I often reflect on all of the “failures” that I’ve experienced in my life… and it’s clear to me now that without them, I simply wouldn’t be the person that I am today.

If you’ve had a recent challenge or “failure,” in your life or career, remember this… any obstacle that you face has the potential to bring you one step closer to the life of your dreams.

The Systematized but still Struggling Practice

How much time have you spent creating a systems dependant versus staff or owner dependant practice?

If you’ve followed my podcast episodes, YouTube videos, live events or blog posts, you know that I’m a huge believer in creating systems that run your business and training your team to run the systems.

This structure allows the practice owner to focus on his or her highest value activities and to replace any all-star employee without the practice coming to a screeching halt.

But what if you’ve taken the time to put systems into place but you practice is still struggling?

What if you have airtight protocol and a thorough operations manual but still can’t seem to get your practice to the next level?

AM Meeting

The Systems Driven Dental Practice

Early in my career, much like most dentists, I knew almost nothing about the business and management side of running a systems driven dental practice.

So when it came time to assemble my team, I looked for employees that had the most experience in the field so that I could hand off all of the practice management responsibilities to them while I focused on patient care.

My fatal flaw was that I let the staff run the offices “their way” and because I hadn’t given them any direction or parameters to follow, they were forced to create their own systems and protocols.

The result? Chaos, inefficiency, lack of profitability. The worst part was that I was completely dependent upon my staff.

If anyone got sick, had a family emergency or found a new job, a part of the practice would shut down. Each person on the team created their own way of accomplishing their job description but nobody else could duplicate it.

I had effectively created a team of Primadonnas. As an owner, I had no leverage and the team knew it. I had to pay them what they wanted and do everything that I could to keep them from leaving.

Once I finally realized that something had to change, I began to create systems for every department within my practices.

With the team’s help and feedback, I created a written daily, weekly and monthly protocol for every position.

Now, the systems run the practice, not the employees. What we expect from each team member is clear and defined and if they are absent for whatever reason, they can be replaced immediately by anyone who can follow a cookbook system.

If you’re feeling like you’ve lost control of your team and that you’ve got a Primadonna problem, contact our office and we’ll help you set up the systems you need to decrease your stress and move your practice to the next level.

Whether you want to create multiple streams of income, build multiple practices, or just make your practice and career the very best that it can be, I’ve got an opportunity for you.

On June 3rd and 10th, 2016, the Dental Success Summit will be coming to Auckland and Sydney. I’ll be uncovering the formula that can help any dentist to immediately increase the order and profitability of their dental practice. I’ll also be sharing how to predictably open multiple dental practices and transition them for a huge profit and perpetual residual income.

As a special “thank you” for being a subscriber to this community, I’d like to offer you the Early Bird price of $597 to register for the event, that’s 60% off of the normal registration price.

You’ll be Grateful You Made Time for this Habit

There are a handful of low-cost, no-cost tactics that you can deploy that not only build your practice, but also help to make you a more balanced and grateful person.

  1. Daily post-op calls made by the doctor to all patients who received anesthetic on any given day
  2. Selecting a local “Charity of the Month” and highlighting them in your marketing as well as donating proceeds to them
  3. Hosting a “Free Dental Day” to serve those less fortunate in your community several times per year
  4. Travel on dental missionary trips or donate services to a veteran or victim of abuse or neglect who otherwise could not afford to get their smiles restored

For one of my favorites, watch this quick 3:57 video…

Extreme Ownership

Talk to any ultra-high achiever in any field and you’ll find someone who takes 100% responsibility for everything that happens in her life and business.

I read or listened to over 100 non-fiction books in 2015 and by far, the most impactful was Extreme Ownership, How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin.

In this book, the authors, both battlefield veterans, parallel the tactics, strategies and lessons learned in combat to the world of leadership and business.

In this quick video, I discuss my biggest take-aways and how we, as dentists and practice owners, can apply these lessons to improve every aspect of our personal and professional lives.
